The Excavations

The excavations of 2011 have exposed the sanctuary and part of the nave. At marker <1> you see the stairs up to the sanctuary, which was slightly elevated in 1680. Markers <2> to <5> show a number of levels that were created during various renovations over the last 400 years:

  • Marker <2> shows hexagonal tiles in terracotta, probably from the 19th Century;
  • Marker <3> indicates a slate floor from the eighteenth century;
  • Marker <4> shows fragments of green and white painted ceramic tile known as azulejos, probably rom the first half of the 17th Century;
  • and Marker <5> indicates square and rectangular terracotta tiles from the early 17th Century.

Three graves from the 18th Century have been excavated. The grave at Marker <6> belonged to a man who was about 1.80 meters or 5'10" tall, probably a foreigner. Historical sources show that since the end of the 16th Century, several French businessmen who lived in Cagliari were buried here. Until 1816, more than 1,000 people were laid to rest at Santa Lucia.
